  • The employment offer obtained after completing your course must be directly related to your major field of study.
  • You must obtain the job within 90 days of completing your studies.
  • In order to obtain the OPT, you must have the Designated School Official (DSO) at your university recommend your case for OPT. A DSO is in charge of managing and assisting the status of international students in any particular university.
  • You have to complete a certification process at your university which includes submitting OPT I-20 request form to the International Services Office which can be downloaded from your university’s website.
  • Your university will then send your request to SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) and upon successful completion, a new I-20 immigration form will be generated.

Culture in the USA:

  • American culture is very different from other countries and this can be a real surprise for many students, especially those from Asian countries who go to study in the USA.
  • In the USA, people value individuality; and merit is rewarded handsomely, it is for good reason that America is known globally as ‘the land of opportunity’.
  • The American Declaration of Independence states that all people are created equal and this belief is deeply embedded in their values. They strongly believe in equality and are therefore not very comfortable with explicit displays of deference such as bowing to others or being unnecessarily polite.
  • Because of their belief in individuality and equality, Americans tend to carry an air of informality, and people usually address others by their first name. This should not be taken as a sign of rudeness, rather it should be seen as an inherent part of their culture.
  • Americans tend to value directness and openness in their dealings with other people. They believe that conflicts should be resolved by straightforward discussions among the people involved.
  • There are people from almost all countries living in the USA, making it one of the most diverse countries in the world
